As part of my ongoing tour of free-to-play MMOs, I decided to give DC Universe Online a go, during one of the brief windows when their servers are working properly.
Lets see, pros - looks nice, more action than most MMOs, I have a power that makes a meteor materialise, hitting enemies and setting them on fire... and then I can pick the meteor up and hit people with it.
Cons - character customization is very limited, interface is pretty awkward, missions are fairly dull and repeditive, and, as mentioned, the servers really can't cope with the influx of free players.
And there's the problem of using the DC Comics universe as a setting. Initially, it's kinda cool to have Batman as your mentor, but then you think about it and you realise, wait, if Batman's my mentor... I'm Robin?
And then you realise you're not even Robin, you're a backup auxilary Robin, sent out on missions that don't even call for the real Robin's intervention.
So I ended up creating a villian instead. Being one of Lex Luthor's goons might not be a particularly safe career choice, but at least it's got a little dignity.
