The Beard of Abe Lincoln
Jan. 19th, 2008 12:13 amEver heard of Grace Bedell? No? Well, neither had I, until I found her entry when browsing wikipedia. She is, apparently, 'notable as the person who influenced Abraham Lincoln to grow a beard'.
I'm a little suprised to learn that Lincoln's beard has a secret origin... and I've got to admit, I've lost a little bit of respect for the Great Emancipator in learning that he didn't decide on his beard himself, he only grew it because he was talked into it by an eleven year old.
According to wikipedia, the story became a popular children's story. Children's stories in the ninteenth century must have sucked if "A girl told Lincoln to grow a beard. He did." was one of the popular ones...
