Fortunately, we live in a modern society, so need not wallow in ignorance when it comes to our snack foods! We checked wikipedia, which has a fairly detailed entry on the history of the pretzel.
As it turns out, pretzels date back to the seventh century. The entry includes a picture from a medieval manuscript of a king at a banquet, complete with pretzels. This strikes me as the sort of historical trivia that's completly usesless if you're writting a story; even after reading up on the history of pretzels, if I were to read a book where a medieval king is munching on some pretzels, it's still going to strike me as a massive anachronism...
