Huh. Turns out in Ancient Greek, a double negative equals an emphatic negative... No wonder my translations weren't making any sense...

That's the same as in Russian, still. It helps if you think of it as being like our English idiom, "do not, repeat, NOT" - a reinforcement, which we do use, just not the same way. (And the Cyrillic alphabet was made largely out of the Greek one, since it was devised by Greek missionaries, so there's another way that Gk studies could help with Slavic language studies.)
