I've finally gotten ahold of Twilight. I think Stephenie Meyer has two competing stories in her head - one full of the old cliche romance tropes, and another going, "Hey, wait just a minute. This is actually creepy!" She either can't choose between them or doesn't realize she's got battling stories, and so it comes out kind of both.
I bet there are fanfics out there continuing the story in which Renesmee's true evil mind-control is revealed.
