I haven't seen the movie yet, and until a week ago I wasn't convinced I was ever going to, but now I'm rather looking forward to it. Still, there are some things in your post that bother me... like the Kirk thing. Kirk in TOS mostly fell JUST on the right side of being a dangerous maverick, and in all honesty there were times when he stepped across the line. If he's worse in this version, my Suspenders of Disbelief may be strained beyond all recovery.
Also, for some reason, spiky Romulan ship really bugs me. Klingons have spikes. Romulans have graceful, sleek, predatory ships.
