They're not necessarily fans! (They might be, I have no idea, but there's alternate possibilities.) Some people find Avatar annoying precisely because it allows viewers to fantasize about what they "would have done" while ignoring actual situations like that still existing, so it is possible that the protesters are just capitalizing on that white guilt. "Hey, you said you care about the plight of the natives in movies... have you noticed any, you know, parallels with real life? Put your money where your mouth is."
