I Look For Things

Found a free trial for Star Trek Online – thought I’d give it a go for a few days while waiting for it to switch to free-to-play. Kinda fun, probably not worth a subscription, but entertaining. Space combat reminds me, of all things, of Sid Meier’s Pirates, with lots of circling to get into position…
Anyway, while I was flying from system to system, I got curious and checked out the premium items store. To me, there wasn’t a lot of stuff that felt like it was missing from the game – I got a pet horta and an inventory full of tribbles and got to fly a stolen bird-of-prey against the Doomsday Machine, so I was curious what the developers felt people would be willing to pay a premium to acquire.
Tons of new uniforms, of course – I’m sceptical anyone would actually pay real money for the Motion Picturepyjamas uniforms, but sure, I can see people wanting the proper TNG uniforms or something like that. The usual services – extra character slots, respec tokens, that sort of thing. The future Enterprise-D from “All Good Things” as a playable ship. Oddly, the Oberth class as a playable ship – I’ve always had an affection for that goofy looking thing, but I suspect I’m an outlier.
And the option to unlock new playable species. Now, the base game covers most of the major races – Federation players can be human, Vulcan, Andorian, Bajoran, Betazoid, Bolian, Trill or Benzite, while Klingons can be Klingon, Orion, Gorn or Nausicaan, and there’s also a generic ‘alien’ option that lets you build a Cardassian or a Vorta or any number of surly forehead aliens. So, what new options do you get if you’re willing to pay a little extra?
Ferengi – well, alright, I can see some people wanting that. Klingon as a Federation option, sure. Joined Trill – huh. Regular Trill’s already a free option, and the stat boost for being joined isn’t much. Still, it’s available for both factions, so you could make Jadzia as part of your Klingon crew, I guess. Tellarite – well, they’re a founding Federation member, and could be fun as a TOS throwback crew. Caitian – not my thing, but I’m sure there’s plenty of furies willing to play them, and it’s nice to see the animated series acknowledged. Rigellian – honestly, I have no memory of these guys. Were they in Enterprise?
And Pakled. Pakled. Someone decided “You know what players will be willing to play a premium for? A Pakled captain!” Not Romulan. Not Cardassian. Not Tamarian. Pakled.
Alright, granted, the idea of playing Captain Pakled of the Starship Make Us Go is kind of amusing, but still… I’m not sure Cryptic is really thinking things through all the way…
Which I guess makes them Pakled of a sort themselves?
