Disney Aquires Lucasfilm
Seriously, what? I mean, Disney’s interest in absorbing more and more popular culture into their collective is obvious, but why was Lucas interested in selling? Did he suddenly wake up and realise he’s spent the last few decades tweaking the same movie over and over again and realise he had to do something to make sure he wouldn’t be tempted to make another Special Edition?
Anyway, I think this is a good thing, because it means the producers of Pirates of the Caribbean can finally drop the charade and just make the Monkey Island movies they’ve obviously wanted to make…
Jokes aside, two things strike me as fascinating. One is that the general reaction from the geek community has actually been fairly positive – which just goes to demonstrate how much of modern Star Wars fandom seems built around hating George Lucas more than anything else. When people think Disney’s a step up from the actual creator of the work they claim to like… something weird is going on.
Second, didn’t Lucas, years ago, have the idea that all the Star Wars movies would be written and directed by different people? I remember reading somewhere that was kinda his plan before The Empire Strikes Back, that Star Wars wouldn’t be all him, it’d be all sorts of different visions of the basic premise of a modern pulp sci-fi adventure. It’s kinda funny that that might actually happen now, after so many years…
