In which the main character is MIA

Well, I pretty much loved everything about this episode. It was great seeing the whole crew again – though of course, I am going to miss Spock and Pike's contributions to the dynamic. On the other hand, with them gone, I finally got my wish, and we get Captain Saru! And he's already proving himself more than capable of filling the job, showing both compassion and leadership to a crew thrown completely out of their depth.

The idea that Tilly is the perfect person to bring on a mission to get a positive first impression of Starfleet and the Federation was delightful, and I loved the interaction between her and Saru, with Saru recognising her strengths as an officer, indulging her eccentricities, while also reigning her in when necessary.

Meanwhile, the Emperor Georgiou is still trying to fit into a society where causal murder is somehow frowned upon. I enjoyed the little interaction with Nhan that shed some light on why each of them stayed with Discovery. She seems to have developed an odd respect for anyone who stands up to her challenges; I'd guess that's something of a novelty for her, given her former rank and position. Whether that will lead to Starfleet's values rubbing off on her, or whether she'll remain a dangerous wild card, who can say – I'm sure it'll be entertaining either way. I'm amused that she doesn't seem to object to Saru's orders so much as be utterly confused by them, an ethical system completely alien to her.

We don't get as much world building as we did last time, but what we saw was intriguing. I assume the damage to the unknown planet was a side-effect of the Burn; the colony is described as a mining outpost, so I'm guessing it was rich in Dilithium. One wonders how many other worlds are devastated like this.

The courier refers to the Federation as “V'draysh” in his pidgin trade language – the same term used by Craft to describe his enemies in the Short Trek “Calypso”. It's still a little unclear how Calypso fits into the timeline we're seeing now, but it might indicate that an organised remnant of the Federation still exists - though it may not take a form we or Discovery would recognize.

(I also loved that the courier immediately recognised Discovery had time traveled; we're far enough in the future that time travel's barely a novelty any more, and any idiot can recognise the signs of a temporal wormhole.)

Finally, what's going on with Detmer? It could be remnants of Control in her cybernetics, but that seems like it'd just be repeating the Ariam (RIP) story from last season. I'd like to offer an alternate theory – the 'parasitic' nature of the unnamed world's ice was repeatedly mentioned, but never saw a pay-off. Could that have somehow infecting Detmer's inorganic parts during the crash?
