I’m kind of irritated about The Force Unleashed, for two reasons. Number one, because it’s not coming out for PC, so I won’t get a chance to play it. Number two, because of the hype, building it up as the ultimate Star Wars game – which is rubbish! The ultimate Star Wars game would be another bloody X-Wing game, damnit! IT HAS BEEN ALMOST TEN YEARS SINCE X-WING: ALLIANCE!

Seriously, doing Jedi stuff with the Force sounds fun, but *real* Star Wars is about taking out massive spaceships with a handful of well-placed torpedoes, while dog-fighting waves of TIE interceptors. Hmphr.

My theory is that there’s two key types of Star Wars fans – those that think of Luke Skywalker as a pilot who happens to also have a lightsaber, and those that think of him as a Jedi who happens to also be a pretty good pilot. Unfortunately, thanks to the triple-damned prequels and their obsessive focus on the Jedi, Star Wars media is focusing on group two to the exclusion of all else! And by all else, I mean ‘what I personally like’!

*wanders off, grumbling about kids these days*

And then there's mythology obsessed weirdos like me who think of Luke Skywalker as one half of a father-son Joseph Campbell hero's arc. ;) Who happens to be a Jedi and a pretty good pilot.

On a more serious note, though, can we go back to the good old days when there were people besides Jedi actually being important in the Star Wars universe? Please?

We need another Jedi purge... say what you will about the Empire, at least then ordinary men and women could rise through the ranks and make a difference in the battle to restore order to the galaxy... damnit, where are my TIE Fighter disks...

As far as I can tell, Star Wars seems to have mutated into a superhero setting while I wasn't paying attention...

Yeah, the superhero-ification of the Jedi is what really annoyed me about the prequels. Especially since, ultimately, they're ineffective. All the real action was going on in the political arena and behind the scenes with Palpatine. The Jedi just spent the entire PT chasing after the sticks Palpatine threw them to lead them in the wrong direction.

I got my ass kicked by Rogue Leader, and I've never even played X-Wing: Alliance. I have played Starfighter, but I wasn't overly impressed by it. Just enough to buy the game if I ever have a spare 10 bucks. I've wanted to play Jedi Starfighter, but I haven't gotten the chance.

I like that they're doing a game that focuses on the Jedi aspect, and on getting it right. I've only seen one game that really shows you what it's like to be a Jedi, and that's Jedi Outcast. I've played Episode I: The Phantom Menace and I know there's Star Wars: Obi-Wan, but those games weren't particularly well-received. Lego Star Wars and Lego Star Wars II do a good job, but...they're Legos. It's not *quite* the same. ;D

That being said, there is something to be said for the fanbase of starfighter games. It could have something to do with Factor 5 not being active. Didn't they have some problem with Nintendo or something? They were the ones who pumped out the starfighter games (after X-Wing and Tie-Fighter), so with them gone, nobody wants to take up the job of producing more fighter games.

Rogue Squadron, Rogue Leader, and Rogue Squadron III were very well-received, so you'd think *someone* would be interested in doing more of them. But you know video game companies. *shakes his head*

I'm still waiting for Nintendo to realize they can do more than one Mario adventure game on a console.

I think the main issue is that Lucasfilm wanted the majority of the games coming out while the prequels were coming out to be prequel themed, and the prequels really didn't have many iconic spacecraft... I mean, the OT had X-Wings and TIEs and A-Wings and the Falcon and Star Destroyers... the PT had, what, those yellow Naboo fighters and the X-wingy type ships from the start of RotS.

Plus, the flight-sim genre is practically dead on the PC, and even a top-notch new X-Wing game probably wouldn't be enough to convince most people to go out and buy a joystick for it...
