Unscientific polling: after the new Trek movie came up in a conversation with friends the other day, only one person present seemed enthusiastic about a new film with the original crew rather than the Next Generation crew. I suspect this anomaly is due entirely to her being a big Boston Legal fan, as she lost all interest on learning that Shatner wouldn’t be back…

Hmm – James Spader as Spock – I can see it working.

Anyway, Wired has an article on the new Star Trek movie:

In the end, is it Star Trek?
That depends on how you answer one question: Was Star Trek entertaining because of the exploits and interactions of characters of Kirk, Spock, McCoy and company, or did you enjoy those characters because of the veteran actors playing them?
If it's the latter, Abrams' kids can't pull off that sort of effortless chemistry and gravitas. They're too busy running around and yelling. If it's the former, Kirk is still a man of action, Spock is still brilliant and McCoy and Scotty are still effective comic relief.

Oh boy. Sounds like a desperate effort to put something resembling a positive spin on things – I don’t entirely see how enjoying the ‘interactions of characters’ is different to enjoying the skill of the actors portraying those characters; if the new film can’t pull off the later, there’s no interactions to enjoy… ‘Man of action’ and ‘brilliant’ are not characters.

I admit, I am kind of looking forward to seeing this thing; hopefully it will be entertaining bad rather than just wretchedly dull…

I've just got to say, if someone called McCoy and Scotty "effective comic relief" then I hope they put a heap of emphasis on "effective".
