Formating and Etiquette
Jan. 14th, 2008 05:47 pmDoes anyone else find themselves obsessing over ensuring all their LJ posts use consistant formatting? I mean, I realise most people probably aren't checking through my archives to see if both my fanfics were posted in the same format, but I still check myself to make sure that the titles were both put in the same sort of quotation marks... I have the same obsession with ensuring all my university essays are formatted identically. Oddly, I'm completly oblivious to inconsistant formatting in other people's work.
Anyway, question: How long do you think a post should be able to get before it needs to be put behind a LJ cut? I don't care myself, but I was wondering if anyone was thinking my longer posts should be cut.

on 2008-01-14 05:41 pm (UTC)I have contradictory impulses. On one hand, I want all of the same type of entries to have a consistent look for shininess and ease of recognition (by myself or others). So I do go back to old posts to see how I did it then, and I have gone back and redone older posts to match at least twice. On the other hand, I also like toying with new methods to see if I can find one I like even better. Not that it's drastically different or anything - more like tweaking. I'm also the kind of person who makes up tables of contents for both online and paper journals. Obsessive, me? Nah...
Hm, good question. I generally go by "if I see lots more text when I scroll down, it needs a cut." I sometimes cut slightly shorter ones, but not as often. I base that more on text density - if it's a series of short paragraphs, I'll probably leave it uncut; it it looks visually dense, I'll cut it so other peoples friends page won't look as wordy. (My screen is rectangular rather than the old square style, which probably makes a difference too.)
